Why the same sale pays so differently

Two marketplaces can both say "around 10%" and still pay you very different amounts for the same item, because they charge on different things. eBay takes its percentage from the whole order, shipping and sales tax included. Poshmark takes 20%, but only of the item price, and the buyer pays shipping straight to Poshmark. Depop, Vinted and eBay UK's private sellers have moved most of the cost onto the buyer instead. Whatnot charges a commission on the item and a separate processing fee on everything the buyer pays.

That's why the comparison above uses the same sale price and shipping for every platform, then applies each one's real rules. It's a fair starting point, not the whole story: who your buyers are and how fast an item sells usually matter more than a couple of points of fees.

What these calculators include

  • Every fee line, separately. Commission, processing, fixed per-order fees, ad fees and tax on fees where it applies, so you can see where the money goes.
  • Your real profit. Add what you paid for the item and what postage costs you, and the calculator shows profit, not just payout.
  • Reverse mode. Type in what you want to end up with and the calculator works out the price to list at, fees included.
  • What the buyer pays. Where a platform charges the buyer a fee, you'll see the total they pay at checkout.

Kept up to date

Marketplace fees change more often than most sellers notice. Since 2024, eBay raised its main rate, Mercari moved its fees from buyers to sellers, Depop dropped seller fees in three countries and Whatnot replaced its flat rate with sales tiers. Every calculator here lists the official pages its numbers come from and the date they were last checked, and each source is re-checked weekly. The fee change log lists every change we've recorded, and how we check fees explains the process.

Common questions

Which selling platform has the lowest fees?

For the seller, Vinted (UK) and eBay UK private sellers charge nothing on a standard sale, because the buyer pays the fee instead. In the US, Facebook Marketplace local pickup is free, and among shipping platforms the lowest percentage depends on price: run your own item through the comparison above. Low fees don't always mean more money, though. A platform with more buyers for your kind of item can pay more even after higher fees.

Do these calculators include sales tax?

Where a platform charges its fee on sales tax (eBay and Etsy's processing fee, for example), the calculator has a sales tax field, because the tax raises your fee even though the tax itself goes to the state. Income tax on your profit isn't included.

Are the calculators free?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
